The building work on the monastery began in 1387 or 1388, on the orders of D. João I, to mark the victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota. Over the course of almost 200 years, until around 1533, it mobilised extraordinary human and material resources, providing the opportunity for the introduction and development of various techniques and arts in Portugal.The Monastery is a historic landmark in Portuguese architecture, a grand construction from the late Gothic period.
